Overview

The course Landscape Studies offers a unique opportunity in Italy to study in-depth landscape issues within a vibrant and multidisciplinary scientific environment.
The programme will provide students with specific skills and competencies in order to develop a critical approach to dealing with landscape issues within different contexts. In particular, students will be able to analyse, integrate and interpret data and knowledge regarding both technical and humanistic aspects of landscapes; apply principles of sustainability in environmental, economic and socio-cultural terms in accordance with the 2030 Agenda’s Sustainable Development Goals; develop projects for the management and promotion of landscapes; use methodologies and tools to stimulate awareness and participation and create effective communication about landscape issues.
In line with the most advanced international perspectives in landscape studies, this course follows the recommendations of the Declaration of Higher Education on Landscape.

Programme structure

The study plan covers natural and cultural rural and urban landscape issues including a range of disciplines such as geography, landscape law, regional and landscape planning, statistics and qualitative methodologies, geographic information systems and digital landscape visualisation, Anthropocene studies, landscape history and archaeology, place marketing, tourism and landscape, landscape education and participation studies, creative communication and art and film studies.
The teaching style is interactive and the programme is enhanced by seminars, workshops and laboratories; fieldwork and practical lessons; Erasmus exchanges with European partners specialising in landscape; a stage in collaboration with non-academic partners; the possibility to elaborate on a final thesis in the form of a project work and active participation in events promoting landscape culture.

Career opportunities

Graduates will learn how to work in public and private bodies within enterprises and organisations in the following areas: support to landscape planning and management processes; landscape promotion within the fields of tourism, leisure and recreation; development of landscape education, participation and communication activities.
Graduates may also consider a career as a geography teacher in schools upon obtaining their teaching qualifications and successfully participating in calls for teaching pursuant to current regulations.
